During the virtual book talk, guests will have an opportunity to greet the author, enjoy a book discussion and ask questions during a live Q&A. There will also be a book giveaway at the end!

Long time Ann Arbor writer and educator Frances Kai-Hwa Wang reads from her new book, You Cannot Resist Me When My Hair Is in Braids. With many stories set on the streets and in the cafes of Ann Arbor, this is a mischievous and fierce collection of lyric essays and prose poems deftly navigating the space between cultures, punctuated by wise children, bossy aunties, unreliable suitors, and an uncertain political landscape that is Asian America. With artwork and stories behind the stories, we will discuss the challenges of writing in these political and pandemic times.

When the U-M Library and the Ann Arbor District Library asked community members to submit handmade postcards — mail art — in 2020 to capture the emotions and experiences of the Ann Arbor and U-M community during challenging pandemic times, creative pieces of art started arriving at the library.

Stop by the Hatcher Library to view these physical artifacts that reflect how people were coping during the unexpected Covid-19 shutdown.

Author and community member Frances Kai-Hwa Wang joins AADL staff to discuss the documentary 1989 Who Killed Vincent Chin? She will provide background information about this anti-Asian American hate crime that happened in Detroit in 1981 and connect it to violence against Asian American people today.

An in-person screening of this film will occur on Tuesday, May 3rd at the Downtown Library. A virtual screening will also take place immediately prior to this event.

On a hot summer night in Detroit, Ronald Ebens, an autoworker, killed a young Chinese-American engineer with a baseball bat. Although he confessed, he never spent a day in jail. This gripping Academy Award-nominated film relentlessly probes the implications of the murder in the streets of Detroit, for the families of those involved, and for the American justice system.

WESTLAND, Mich. – Holidays, festivals and religious observances are a time to decorate one’s home, wear festive clothing and serve special foods, but for years when it comes to Ramadan, finding celebratory items to buy has been a challenge in many parts of the United States – even in places like Michigan with large Muslim populations.

“Growing up in America, these types of things were just not available. We weren’t able to have these decors and these celebrations of our heritage and our culture and our religion,” said Fardusee Jaigirdar, co-founder of an all-women-owned collaborative event-planning and décor business.
